Brake Bias

May 9, 2025

Sim RacingBrake bias refers to the distribution of braking force between the front and rear wheels of a vehicle. Adjusting brake bias can affect the vehicle’s handling and stability during braking.

For instance, a 50% setting means the braking force is applied equally to the front and rear wheels of a vehicle. So, adjusting the setting, up or down, will alter how the car behaves under braking.

In general, a front-heavy brake bias helps prevent the rear wheels from locking up, which can cause the vehicle to spin out, especially in high-speed or aggressive braking situations.

Conversely, a rear-heavy brake bias can allow for quicker stops but may increase the risk of losing control if the rear wheels lock up.

Be careful not to overdo the adjustments – you may find a small percentage change is enough.

Most drivers will set the brake bias as a compromise for the lap depending on the type of corners that most dominate on that particular track.

Whereas others are more pro-active, and they are often the better drivers who seem to have more time to do and think about things than us mere mortals, alter the brake bias for individual corners around the circuit.

Perhaps, leaving the brake bias as a compromise for most of the lap, but making an adjustment for a particular corner, for instance, a heavy braking zone leading up to a tight hairpin bend, might be a good middle ground.

Don’t forget to set it back after the corner, ready for the next corners.
