A couple of years or so ago it looked like Rennsport might be making a bid to be a genuine contender in the racing simulator world.

Starting off with a closed beta, only accessable to those with a hard-to-come-by closed beta key, the sim got off to a reasonable start.

But the closed beta went on and on for what seemed like a very long time and the closed beta keys that were initially very sought after, became, perhaps, a little less wanted with time.

After the initial excitement, I think people got a little fed up with all the waiting.

Although the open beta has now eventually been released, so everyone can have a go, Rennsport seems to have lost a lot of its earlier interest.

Whether that’s because of the delays in getting it available to more sim racers more quickly, or the lack of content or the public’s perceived lack of direction with the sim, it certainly has lost some of the interest it originally had.

It might also be the developers concentration so far on the esports side of things with plenty of prize money available for the best drivers, with competitions around the world, while the ordinary sim racer seems to be of much less significance.

But selling the game to the ordinary sim racer is where the money will be and therefore where success will eventually come from.

So, perhaps, apart the initial threat of a new significant sim entering the market, and therefore being, perhaps, some of the reason behind the apparent increase in iRacing’s improvement and quest to stay at the top, Rennsport has so far proved, generally to most people, to be a bit of a disapointment.

But who knows, Rennsport might eventually prove to be as good as it once promised.

But it needs direction. And the initial paid content offerings available with the launch of the open beta, will have to be better thought out, and a lot more inspiring if they are to tempt enough ordinary sim racers to part with their hard-earned cash.
