Steering Wheels come in all shapes and sizes – actually, they don’t really – most of them are round or formula style, and the sizes range, in general, from about 280mm to 320mm.
But, nevertheless, there are plenty of different wheels, or as they are also known, rims, to choose from. And the prices can vary widely.
Here are a few of the wheels that have caught my eye recently and, if I had enough money, would be nice to own.
First up is the Soelpec Spectra XR. It has a 5” touch screen and lots of colourful buttons and encoders, and is very configurable.
Soelpec do have their own dedicated dash but they recommend using SimHub for, as they put it, ‘ultilising all the illumination and dashboard functionalities of the display’.
At the time of writing, the Spectra XR is £1499,00, but that doesn’t include VAT, and any import taxes.
Another wheel that looks very good is the Pro wheel from Bavarian Simtec.
It also has plenty of buttons and encoders as well which can be mapped in whatever way you like.
Each button can be personalized with a different colour which can change when pressed.
The wheel’s width is 300mm and comes with a 4” touch screen which is compatible with SimHub. So you can choose and configure the dash and the control the rim’s LED lights with that software.
At the time of writing the Bavarian Simtec Pro steering wheel is priced at £1,427,00 not including tax and any import taxes that may be payable in your location.
Probably the wheel I like the most, at the moment, and the one that I would most like to own is the Asetek Invicta steering wheel.
At the time of writing, it was unveiled only a couple of weeks ago, so it is still very new to the market.
But sim racing content creators across the world who have been lucky enough to secretly use the wheel ahead of its release date have given it a big thumbs-up.
The reviews that I’ve watched have all been very positive, with little or no negativity at all. The new wheel seems to have been received very well indeed.
It has got plenty of buttons, encoders and LED’s that make the wheel look very pretty, but Asetek have done things a little differently than their competitors.
As with other wheels in their range, Asetek have gone with LEDs and stickers just above each button, rather than, as with other maker’s wheels, the push buttons having name stickers and being themselves, backlit.
Asetek say they have done it this way so that when pushing a button you don’t cover up it’s function. Some people may question this, but I think it’s a rather good idea.
The wheel comes with its own dash but this can be changed in their excellent RaceHub software. In fact, not only is it SimHub compatible, but Asetek have actually got the SimHub option built into their software’s menu.
The Asetek Invicta, depending on the configuration you choose, is priced from £1249.00.
These are just three of my favourite steering wheels at the moment. Others I like and are worth taking a look at, are Gomez Sim Industries Hyper P1 at £1,314.00 and their Formula Elite Pro priced at £996.00, and the Cube Controls CSX-3 at 1,335.00 euros.
